Supporting schemas in your setting – factsheet

Description

Schemas are described as patterns of repeated behaviour in young children. For example, placing things next to one another, in series or enclosing materials. It is important that practitioners understand the different types of schemas and respond to them to support and extend children’s learning and development.

Often when practitioners read about schemas they recognise the patterns of behaviour but
have not used this terminology before to describe it.

This factsheet will explore the different types of schemas and give practical ways and examples of how to incorporate these into each individual child’s observation and planning cycle.
